African PercussionAdowas

The Adowa drums were used by royal courts across Ghana to summon the town or make announcements. Our Adowa are hand-carved and dyed and adjustable by the musician through six hand-carved pegs. A relative of the Congo drum, but in many ways its superior, the Adowa was popularized by the Ga peoples' dance of the same name that emerged around the time that Ghana successfully achieved its independence from Britain. The dance, and the drum that forms its centerpiece, is a celebration of the good things in life and the hope for a new world.
